The hedges we cut
- Garden hedges — privet, beech, hornbeam, laurel and the rest, kept trimmed, square and healthy
- Conifer hedges and leylandii — trimmed to keep them in check, or reduced in height where they’ve got away. (A word of caution below on how far a conifer can be cut back)
- Overgrown and neglected hedges — brought back to a manageable size and shape over one or two cuts
- Farm and estate hedge lines — longer boundary hedges maintained on a seasonal cycle
Trimming, reducing and reshaping
A routine trim keeps a hedge dense, tidy and the size you want it. A height or width reduction brings an overgrown hedge back under control — useful where it’s taking light, blocking a path or outgrowing its spot. Reshaping a neglected hedge sometimes takes two sessions a season apart, so it thickens back up rather than being left bare.
One honest warning about conifers. Most conifers — leylandii especially — won’t regrow from old brown wood. Cut the sides back past the green growth and you’re left with bare brown patches that never green up again. We’ll always tell you how far a conifer hedge can safely be taken in, and if it’s really too big to reduce without ruining it, we’ll say that too — sometimes removal and replanting is the honest answer.
Nesting season
Hedges are prime nesting habitat, and all active birds’ nests are protected by law. Between roughly March and August we check before we cut, and where there’s an active nest we’ll work around it or come back — it’s the law, and it’s the right thing. Autumn and winter are the ideal time for a hard reduction anyway.
